In 1937 the
publisher Tériade put out the first issue of Verve.
Due to its exceptional quality - the finest printing techniques
were employed - Verve was, and continues to be, regarded
as unique in the world. Novel in conception and presentation, Verve
offered an original lithograph on its cover. Some of the greatest
painters of the period contributed to it, including Matisse, Chagall,
Picasso and Rouault. Tériade also took care to call on the
best writers of the day, and Claudel, Valéry, Sartre et Malraux
were among those who wrote for it. The publication of this veritable
anthology of painting and literature ceased in 1960.
