In the early
1900s, Beck began painting a series of life-sized portraits of men
who served in the American Civil War. This pastel was made as part
of that series, and eventually became part of the collection of
the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American Art. These
pastels are considered among the most important art memorials of
the Civil War.
